It helps that the voting machines are designed and audited by their electoral commission, and this includes having no software updates, the code is burned permanently and upgrades are done by replacing entire machines. Just one way third-world countries with constrained budgets show us how right-sizing tech is the way forward.<br /><br />The French run elections on a purely paper system. You go in, pick up 2 or more pre-printed ballots for the candidates, go into a booth, put the one you want in an envelope and discard the others, then go to the poll officer and drop your envelope in an urn when your ID is verified. Volunteers come to count the ballots (marked or otherwise altered ballots are considered invalid).
